Chesterton's Fence

A [C]lot of people seem to [Em]want to be different
for [F]no reason except [G]to be different

The [C]status quo is [Em]pretty sad
but [F]don't throw the good out, [G]with the bad

The [C]apple rolls back to the [G]tree
The [Am]salmon swims back up the stream
and has [F]babies that do [C]exactly as they [G]please
and the [C]babies roll [Em]back to the [G]tree
and the [Am]babies swim back up the stream
and have [F]babies that look a [C]lot like you and [G]me

Did you wear the hole in the (knee) of your jeans
Or buy them falling apart at the seems

Who can actually hear the difference between
The fifty-dollar vynle and the one-cent stream

The rebels all look suspiciously the same
trying to fit in with the people who don’t care if they fit in

But the apples roll back to the tree and the
The salmon swims back up the stream
and has babies,

But there’s a [C]chance to [F]escape
Far a [C]sheep to change [F]shape
To [C]leap into [F]space
Catch a [C]ride to a [F]far [G]star-base

Many things are stupid and out of season
But everything that's there is there for a reason

So give the old ways a fair shot
Other people might have thought of things that we have not

The old guard can be vexing
but they're doing something real while we/people are texting

Chorus

Young parents – lay-down the laws
The same ones they broke when they were small

If you want to have effect you-gotta understand the cause
The working of the system and the turning of the cogs

Chesterton’s fence may be flawed
But a rebel's not a rebel just for breaking a law

Chorus
